Jellie Park freebie plan – leave the car at home ANDREW KING

Parking woes at Jellie Park could be solved with offers of free use of facilities if you leave the car at home. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board have hatched a plan to entice people into cycling, walking or taking the bus to the Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre by introducing “community/ cyclist currency”. This would mean those who used public transport, walked or cycled to the facility would be eligible for free use of equipment or discounted rates. City council staff are investigating the option, and will include the idea in public consultation for the management plan that starts Saturday. Once consultation is complete the

final decision will be made by city councillors. Parking issues have plagued the popular aquatic and recreation centre prompting the board to “think outside of the box”, said deputy chairman David Cartwright. Mr Cartwright (left) thought if the idea could gain some traction then car parking problems could be more manageable. If it works, he said it could be initiated city-wide. “Obviously there are some car parking issues here and around the city, so if we can find a way to fix that and help people get active I think we should seriously consider it,” he said. “There will be some people who are against it and some for it, but let’s have the conversation and see what comes of it,” Mr Cartwright said.

INCENTIVES: The idea of offering discounts to users of Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre if they cycle, walk or use public transport to access it has been raised. With limited space around Jellie Park, car parking is a problem. HAVE YOUR SAY Would you use public transport or cycle to Jellie Park if you received discounts or incentives while using the facility? First step soon for Hornby mega facility

Suspected arson at Boys’ High

GEORGIA O’CONNOR HARDING

Plans for a possible mega-community facility at Denton Park are only weeks away from their first step. Public consultation for the location of the Hornby Library and Service Centre and South West Pool projects are expected to open in February and March. The location of the facility is likely to be a contentious one – Denton Park is used by several sports organisations. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board and city council staff met behind closed doors on December 15 to discuss location options. City council development manager major facilities, Simon Battrick, said the potential locations could not be officially revealed because it was “commercially sensitive”, and affected parties had not been consulted. He said previously proposed locations have included Denton Park and Hornby High School. The community facility is likely to be similar to Te Hapua:

Halswell Centre. Hornby – one of the fastest growing suburbs in Christchurch desperately needs modern community facilities, Hornby locals told Western News. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck has also gone into bat for the facility. A second site mooted for the facility is Hornby High School, but that is unlikely to happen Western News understands. Ms Buck said she was “keen” to get the proposed facilities up and running especially with the issue Hornby and Sockburn are fast-growing

populations that have been a long time without a pool. Canterbury Track Cycling spokesman Terry McLeod said he hoped the city council would work through a process of where they would go if the community facility went ahead at Denton Park.

Fire crews battled a blaze that tore through the old archives building at Christchurch Boys’ High School on Friday morning. Fire Service southern communications shift manager Riwai Grace said the building was a single-storey 10m by 5m brick storage shed and because it was earthquake damaged, firefighters did not enter. He said the fire was well involved when crews from Christchurch Central, Harewood and Sockburn arrived around 1am. The fire is being treated as suspicious and police and fire investigations are under way. PHOTOS: ANDREW KING

Is Christmas still Flame files Holiday period free worth celebrating? from significant fires

Michael Gorman – Christchurch City Missioner

Many people find Christmas very stressful. Some are reminded of happier times in the past when things were better for them. Many are lonely and isolated. For some stress comes from not being able to provide for their families because of illness, poverty or a lack of ability. It seems reasonable to question if it is worth celebrating Christmas at all. For those who have faith in the Christmas story, or who have family that they can celebrate with it is well worth the effort. At the City Mission we work hard to enable more people to enjoy this time of year and to have a happy Christmas without getting into debt or feeling bad because they cannot enjoy the festive season the way most of us do. Recently there has been discussion about not just about

SOAP BOX how we should celebrate Christmas but should we celebrate Christmas at all. Some say that doing so discriminates against those who do not share our belief and that it is offensive. They suggest that we no longer say Merry Christmas and we should just wish each other a happy holiday. I treasure Christmas and the wonderful story of God becoming one of us. I think this is well worth celebrating. This year I was invited to celebrate a Buddhist festival and I felt very privileged to be included. When I celebrate Christmas I too want to honour people of other beliefs or of

no belief. I want to share with them something that I hold special. I’m not asking them to believe what I believe but I want to share something that is important to me. I want them to celebrate with me, spend time with me, eat food with me and know me. Christmas is a part of my belief system and a part of my culture. I do not deny others their celebrations, culture and festivals and I am honoured if they include me in them. I do believe in the power of words and I know that they have the power to offend but when I say Merry Christmas this is a gift, an invitation to understand my belief. How can that be offensive?

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Have your say Looking back at Christmas last year, is it worth still celebrating? Does it drive more people into despair because of stress? Is it better to say “happy holidays” or are people being too PC? Email georgia. oconnor@starmedia.kiwi with your thoughts.

My first job for 2016 is to wish everyone a happy and safe new year in the hope that some of the work that has been done to reduce fires has had an effect. So far this year and even through the Christmas period this has been the case. While there have been a few minor incidents involving grass, rubbish bins and fences the holiday period has been remarkable for the lack of significant fires, or for that matter, other types of incident. So well done Christchurch and long may it last. As usual however, our intrepid crews have been involved in a number of animal rescues including ducklings, a cat, a dog down a cliff in Lyttelton, a swan and even a drowned horse in Akaroa Harbour. This sort of work obviously involves the ‘feel good’ factor of helping and caring for distressed wildlife but there is no better organisation to deal with such situations. We have decent

Just after Christmas we had the latest version of a long-time fire danger when the wall of a house in Waltham caught fire from the heat of a paint stripping gun. Catering costs ratepayers $2000 plus Riccarton-Wigram Community Board members munched their way through $2705 of ratepayers’ money last year and Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck is not happy. Figures released to the Western News under the Official Information Act showed more than $19,000 was spent by the eight community boards from November 2014 to November 2015 on catering for Vicki Buck meetings. The money was spent on club sandwiches, fruit, savouries, croissants, sushi, wraps, fruit and tea and coffee. Ms Buck said she was not in favour of ratepayer money being spent on catering and she will be “reasonably tough” on the issue. She said the issue of public money being spent on catering is likely to be addressed in the next community board meeting.

The average cost for the 24 meetings throughout the year was $112. Ms Buck said at a city council level, it does not do catering unless there are guest or a special occasion. She said she wasn’t aware of the cost at city council meetings and they don’t usually do catering unless there are guests or it is a special occasion. “I prefer the council’s ap-

proach that they don’t spend any money and if you want something you go pay for it yourself,” she said. Overall the community boards together spent $19,169.

Figures spent on catering between November 2014 and November last year • Riccarton-Wigram: $2705.98 • Akaroa-Wairewa: $1449.57 • Fendalton-Waimairi: • Hagley-Ferrymead: $3034.80 $1154.38 • Lyttelton-Mt Herbert: • Shirley-Papanui: $2340.43. $1742.52 • Burwood-Pegasus: spent • Spreydon-Heathcote: $3802.29 $2340.43

A Wigram brewery has mass produced the low-alcohol beer that it made for the actors and crew in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Harrington’s Breweries, has released ‘SobeRing Thought,’ a dark low-alcohol stout, especially concocted for Peter Jackson’s smash hit films. The partnership started more than 15 years ago, when the brewery was approached by Weta Workshop. Business director Carl Harrington said: “My brother was brewing up in Nelson when he got the call. They said they needed a beer they could drink on set without getting intoxicated – hobbits can’t handle their beer that well you know,” [laughing]. A one per cent alcohol brew was concocted and used in the first movie – it became so popular that Harrington’s took over all brewing for the rest of the series. “That was more than 30,000 litres over the whole lot of the movies, it was endless really. When the hobbits turn up to the

Prancing Pony [an Inn in the movie] to have a pint – that’s ours,” Mr Harrington said. After the series became a worldwide success, Harrington’s applied to Warner Brothers for the rights to release the beer to the commercial market. They were successful – twice – and have just relaunched it after three years. It’s the “same beer, new packaging,” according to sales manager Dan Patrick: “It’s been so popular on two different sales factors, one, the fans love it, and two – it’s a tasty low-alcohol craft beer in its own right.” The bottles are selling at select New World and Fresh Choice supermarkets and bottle stores in the South Island, for about $14.99 per four-pack. The brewery is looking to launch into duty free stores, the North Island and Australia over the coming months, Mr Patrick said. “The interest internationally is quite huge. We’re trying to get a licence for Asian and American markets. They go crazy for that stuff.”

Kate Taylor

Hocus-pocus: Jazz musician Children better watch out because Badjelly the Witch is coming to town later this month. Georgia O’Connor-Harding speaks to Kate Taylor about her role as the wicked witch as well as her next role as the Madam of a strip club, her well-known grandfather, and the time she sang with Stevie Wonder You are just beginning your rehearsals now and it is only three weeks until the show. What is the schedule like for the next few weeks? It is a pretty short rehearsal period. One of the shortest for a show this big. We are going full with the theatre and we have a whole lot going on the stage. We started yesterday and the team is great. What made you decide Badjelly would be a role you would like to play? Would this be one of the most interesting roles you have committed to? I have never done a kids show. Badjelly is like a legend – Spike Milligan. Our director wants us to keep the essence of the characters. We are going to make Badjelly quirky as well. My costume is probably not what you would expect. But I won’t ruin the surprise. Did you grow up knowing the story of Badjelly the Witch well? Yes, I heard it as a young kid. I was quite a scardey-cat kid so my parents didn’t play it to me

for a while. What is your favourite line from the show and why? Definitely I would have to say “stinky-poo”. I have to say that multiple times and I think that’s the one kids will enjoy the most as well. The book is quite short, will there be any twists or anything different audiences can look forward to? It keeps the essence of the story. Obviously Badjelly trying to find little boys and girls to make into yummy soup. The show is a musical and everyone has got a song. This was so each character can have its own story within the story. For an example we want you to see what Mudwiggle the Worm would be like if he had his own story. It should be more than just Badjelly trying to steal kids. We will jam a whole lot of fun into 55min as well as keep in sync with the original story. Hamish Oliver has done arrangements of music and Geoff Davidson has written the music for us. We have adapted the words to our own original music. I love the music. What are your performance goals for 2016? This first half of the year is busy. I am in another production with Magnitude Productions – Rock of Ages. It is the New Zealand premier of the show so that is super exciting. We have the most amazing cast. Without sounding

cliche it is going to be a hilariously “rocking” show. It is just 80s madness. I am playing the role of Justice who is a powerful woman. She is the madam of the “strip club”. Bit different from Badjelly. It is the whole girl falls in love with the boy. So I have those rehearsals on as well. I am going from Badjelly in the day to Rock of Ages rehearsals in the night. It is quite full on. When you do have any spare time, what do you enjoy doing most? I enjoy just hanging out with my friends to be honest. Being in the music circle my friends are often performing a lot. On a Sunday afternoon I often just like going to the Brewery and listening to my friends sing. I enjoy the sunshine while I am not in the theatre. What made you decide music was the career for you? I actually did classical and opera through Burnside High School. My grandad is Doug Kelly and he is quite a well-known jazz band arranger. He is 93 and still here going strong. Inti tally in high school I did a lot of classical training but when I got accepted into CPIT [Christchurch Polytechnic Institue of Technology] jazz school and my voice just found its place singing jazz. I progressed into teaching. Was your family ever interested in music?

turns into Badjelly the Witch My love for music has definitely come from my grandad. Pretty much everyone in my family can play an instrument – I am just the one that does it as a job. In December the Garden City Big Band put on a tribute for my grandad and Doug Caldwell who is a jazz pianist in his late 80s. They both used to run the Radio City Band. It was pretty much a sell-out. It shows the respect not only from the jazz community but the music community. I also did a surprise tribute for my grandad in 2010 as part of a jazz and music festival. He was quite taken back. Do you think the jazz scene is big in Christchurch? It has a good following. The jazz festival has a great uplifting factor in it. We get to highlight local musicians as well as see the international ones. Even with the earthquakes there are still some great venues hosting cool gigs. There are always opportunities for jazz musicians here to have a working life. Yes, because I wanted to ask you this. Do you think it is possible for a performer to have a full-time career in the city? You definitely can. You have

to work hard obviously and keep grasping at everything you can. You might have to go up to Wellington or elsewhere. If you have the hunger for it, you should be able to find it. It may not be your first choice but it may lead you to what could be your first choice. I am lucky to do it as a full-time job because I am teaching as well but a lot of people do have full-time jobs. You released a jazzy CD of a range of popular songs in 2013 and I hear you have an album coming out this year. Will it be original songs? Basically I am calling it the 12 pianist project. I am planning on using a different pianist every month. I planned on finding as many pianists in Christchurch and doing a different track with them. Christchurch does have some of the most amazing jazz pianists. I am hoping to have that done by early 2017. What are your songs about? I write songs about what inspires me from my own life and about my relationships with people. That doesn’t necessarily mean a sappy love-song. I may write in personal jokes from friends. I feel like it is a success if I have connected with someone.

You have done a lot from because of that I have been able reading your performance CV, to do a lot more. RECLAIM YOUR IDENTITY

When it comes to dentures, Christchurch people have access to world leading techniques and oral aesthetics right on their doorstep.

A

t his Montreal Street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile. There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look one hundred percent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process, to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural predenture smile. Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures – something he calls his signature ‘denture lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. It is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures. As the smile is transformed, so is the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves.

True

Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years running his own clinic in the prestigious Harley Street, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians. His techniques are recognised as worldleading amongst his international peers and he is regularly asked to lecture and run courses worldwide. Miles Cone (DMD, MS, FACP, CDT), a prosthodontist from Oregon, USA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element”. In addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work. “Teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard. There is nothing more satisfying for Richard, than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their self-confidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70% of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin. It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or

probiotics that feed on this yeast. However using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid, and medications are some of the common factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the bloodstream often leading to food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic microorganism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in Cancer and other chronic health conditions. However it is the bodies weakened immune system and

toxic environment that is the real cause of disease. Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. However when this is achieved a great burden will have

been removed from your body resulting in more optimal health. The Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and it’s fungus from the body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health.

I

n fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Television progrmame Dr Oz has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other

health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA, and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Further info and advice is available in store at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Rd, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757.
